About Joshua

Joshua Munroe is a second-year student at the University of Texas at San Antonio majoring in medical humanities with a concentration in pre-advanced professional studies. Through this, he has become proficient in both the sciences and the humanities, particularly professional writing, sociology, and philosophy.  Following his time at UTSA, he plans on attaining medical experience by working as a behavioral health technician and shadowing medical professionals before training to become a physician assistant.

 

Growing up, Joshua found himself diving headfirst into every interest he could find, from piano, to creative writing, to even astrophysics, before eventually honing in on the medical field. While he witnessed his peers fawn over the field due to the potential money being it all, he was more focused on the good he could do for the community. Because his grandmother and mother both worked in the medical field, he was reminded of this goal everyday until he inevitably moved out to attend college.

 

When he entered college, however, this childlike passion for learning everything about everything did not fizzle out. While many majors seemed restricting, he eventually came across medical humanities, which allowed for me to become well-versed in the arts, writing, philosophy, and sociology, all while still excelling in the sciences.

 

To Joshua, medicine isn’t just bandages, heart rates, and scribbled notes on clipboards. It is the physical embodiment of caring for others, even if they’re total strangers. In a way, hew views it as an art—with questions as his sketches and treatments as his medium, he can paint and restore the homeostatic balance that the patient needs. Moreover, Joshua is a firm believer that expanding his knowledge into fields outside of the sciences is an imperative part of learning to effectively care for others.

 

Outside of class, Joshua has volunteered at the San Antonio State Hospital. He enjoys spending his free time with his close friends, going on hikes, finding secondhand vinyls and clothing, and baking.
